OOTD 28 Jan: City Chic, Colette, Deborah K

A work outfit for a casual Friday.. just pop on a dress from City Chic, add some red leggings, comfy shoes and throw on a necklace from Colette... couldn't be simpler!

It's really hard to find plus size leggings in colours that aren't black, I was delighted to get my hands on these (in a straight-sized store no less).. they were just $6, and because they are made of pure spandex they fit me just fine..

The shoes are comfy flats from Target.. they're a dark red suede, and I have already scuffed one toe of them.. soon they will be left to the "wear around the house" pile and not see the office any more.

The skirt part of this dress is in dark grey/blue denim.. this might be the only denim thing in my whole wardrobe.. certainly the closest thing to blue denim I have.

I find "business casual Friday" one of the hardest things to manage, wardrobe wise. I am normally accused of overdressing or not dressing "casual" enough.. I think that's better than looking too slobby though, wouldn't you say? I'm just not a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl and the sorts of clothes I wear when I am on my own time are mostly far too eccentric for the office.

What's your "casual friday" wardrobe?

Review: Victorian Disco Cosmetics Sailor Scout Collection

Some time ago I discovered an awesome indie cosmetics maker called "Victorian Disco" on etsy. Victorian Disco Cosmetics have (amongst other things) a range of hand-blended eyeshadows that have been arranged into some rather geeky and rather awesome collections.  I have been lucky enough to get my hands on some samples..

The one I'm going to show you today is the "Sailor Scout" collection - as the name suggests these have been inspired by the very popular anime "Sailor Moon"..

If you've been paying attention you would have already seen a couple of these colours in action during my Australia Day Makeup Tutorial.. now it's time to show you the rest of them..

Of course there's no prizes for guessing who my favourite Sailor Scout is - of course it has to be the red Sailor Mars! I love this fan-art of her looking all curvy and hot (It's by samurai black on deviantart)

These shadows are very highly pigmented, for the price you will get an amount that lasts a long long time.

Here's a roundup of the baggies I got, the swatches and their inspiration..

I made this nice and snappy so you have have a quick look, but if you want a good look at something  you can pause the video.

Review: Opi Nail Envy

I was loving the shellac on my nails - it lasted so long and was really chip resistant.. but I am not loving what it's done for my nails. For me, it's more or less done the same thing having acrylic nails put on would have - when the shellac did finally chip and peel off, it took some layers of my nail with it - they've been left quite brittle and not at all smooth.

Time for a rest and some drastic action then! I have been putting this on my nails for the past couple of weeks, and I am finding it's working well. It looks cloudy in the bottle, but goes on clear, and doesn't take too long to dry.

The instructions tell you to put two coats on to begin with, a new coat every second day for 10 days and then take it all off with nail polish remover and start again. I haven't been as diligent as all that, absentmindedly keeping it next to my computer and popping some on when I am not typing or baby-wrangling, which is probably every second day or so..

My nails are already starting to look better, and I'm going to keep on using this.. both as a treatment and as a base coat until the bottle runs out, no doubt.

I am telling myself that not having shellac means that I can have more variety in my nail colour, and maybe I will actually get really good at putting nail polish on. Stranger things could happen! :)

Review: Savoir Faire Concealer Pack

You know when you're going out, and it's going to be one of those nights. You're planning on a cocktail or two, a bit of dancing..maybe there will be a pash and dash... there will certainly be lots of laughter and fun..... chances are by the end of the night you are going to be one hot mess.

I don't think trying to keep all your makeup perfect at the expense of having fun is a good bargain, but this little addition to your handbag could make all the difference to looking like a big mess and being able to party hard and not cringe at facebook the next day.

It's the Savoir Faire Concealer Pack, and for the small amount of space and weight it demands in your bag it really works hard. It's around the size of (an Australian) 50 cent coin and a couple of centimetres tall. In the top is a flip lid with two shades of cream concealer, and in the bottom is some loose powder.

With these you can go from looking hot and sweaty to more-or-less pristine again in a matter of moments.

I am not the type to lug around a full beauty kit in my bag.. it's just not my style, but this little hard worker has earned it's place at the bottom of my bag and has "saved the day" more than once.  I thought it was pretty cute when it showed up in my December bellabox, now I think when it runs out I will be happy to plonk down the cash for a replacement.

Domino Dollhouse Lingerie

Domino Dollhouse released a new lingerie collection this week, and OOh LA LAAA!

It makes me SO HAPPY to see these beautiful clothes modelled by women who actually look plus-sized. They have hips and bellies and they look totally amazing. I get really happy - and then I get a bit angry that this isn't a perfectly ordinary occurrence.

Until it IS a perfectly ordinary occurrence, I think we should all support the heck out of stores that are prepared to do it right.

These pieces are all gorgeous, I especially love the girdles with the stocking straps. There's links through to the individual pieces below.

Comment and tell me which one is your favourite!

Makeup Tutorial: Green and Gold look for Australia Day

Hi everyone... and happy Australia Day!

I have to admit - I'd be a lot happier if we chose to celebrate Australia Day on some other day. I think we have a lot to celebrate about our country, but choosing to have our day of celebration coincide with the day some of our ancestors invaded the lands of some of our other ancestors to begin years of genocide and a legacy of racism and inequality that persists to this day would not seem to me, to be the most auspicious day to choose.

Some other day - ANY other day would be a little bit less insulting to those we've wronged.

We're all immigrants or children of immigrants - some of us came here 50 years ago, and some of us came here 100 years ago and some of us came here 40,000 years ago. There's things about our past and our present that we can feel rightfully proud about, and things that we ought to feel shameful about. I don't think one takes away from the other.

Having people use Australia Day as an excuse to spout hateful, racist things really perverts and diminishes us all, I think. I won't stand by and let people do it - and neither should you. If you hear any rubbish about some Australians being less Australian than others because of where they've come from, perhaps remind the idiot speaking about our national anthem... "For those who come across the sea, we've boundless plains to share..."

Of course, while you're celebrating what's great about Australia (and being a positive influence to change what's not so great) you want to look good, right?

Right!

So, here's a funky green and gold look you might want to try out.  I you-tubed it up for you:

I used some fun new colours I got from cool indie cosmetic brand VictorianDisco, they're on etsy.

The colours I used are from their "Sailor Scout" collection. I am going to do a full review of the range very soon.. stay posted!

For this look: Sailor Uranus - a shimmery buttercup yellow, Sailor Moon - a light gold, Sailor Jupiter - a light lime green, and Sailor Pluto, a shimmery jade green.

Have an awesome Australia Day..

Review: Glossybox January 2012

I finally got my GlossyBox! They put in temporary tattoos for Australia Day, cute..

This month's goodies:

My favourite out of this has got to be the eyeliner, it's a lovely dark blue colour and is a felt-tip liner.. I'm going to have fun with that!

Also in the box are two $25 vouchers for "the iconic" (you have to spend $49 each time to get the discount).

Otherwise... Two moisturisers...Two things from the same brand...Two brands we have seen before... It's a box of twos, it would seem. There's no denying that there's more than $15 worth of value here.. the liner alone I would have spent that on and considered it a bargain.. still, I feel a bit underwhelmed by this collection. Maybe I'll change my mind when I've tried some of these.. I'll keep you posted!

OOTD 25 Jan: Striped Corset outfit

I went out to a nightclub event on the weekend, and this is what I wore..

Outfit details:

Skirt: Gown of Thorns (closed down many years ago, sadly, but I am still getting lots of wear from this skirt and I am asked about it almost every time I wear it)

Over that.. a dress from Tempt

Over that.. a striped corset from corsets-au. For the quality, the corsets are very cheap indeed.

Necklace from Collette - you cant really see it in the photo, so I will show this to you again properly soon.

Makeup:

I wanted something dark and sultry to go with the ensemble, so I used the darkest colours in my Urban Decay Naked palette to whip up this very smokey smoky eye!

I used plenty of pencil eyeliner and blended it in well, a good couple of coats of mascara, and I also used a darker-than-usual pencil to highlight my brows for a more dramatic look.

On my lips I used a dark red from Lipstick Queen and for extra pop put a layer of carousel gloss over that.

Review: Layla Magneffects Nail Polish

Regular readers will have already worked out that I am a bit of a nerd. It's no surprise that when I saw this cool new nailpolish that works with magnets I totally couldn't resist it. (Magnets, how does that work?!)

Pretty simple really.. the nail polish has iron filings or similar in it, and the magnet in a specific shape, applied when the polish is still wet, makes the metal particles rise to the top in a pretty pattern..

The one I got is called "purple galaxy" and it's a diagonal stripe pattern. It really is quite a nice effect and it was very easy to do. I did have to re-do a couple to get it right - I held the magnet too close and bumped my wet nail against the lid a couple of times..

With some practice I can see this being very simple to apply.

So - what do you think? Are magnetic nailpolishes the next big trend?

Review: Clinique Turnaround Overnight Moisturiser

This was in the December Glossybox. It's in a cute little glass jar.. rather hideously overpackaged for a 7ml sample.. the packaging weighs over 20 grams!, not including the box the jar came in. Of course glass is recyclable, and the plastic lid.. but still..

The product advertising is suitably hyperbolic.. here's the moisturiser nestled in a crytal ice palace...

Pretty.. but does it work?

Review: Lylou Massage Gel - Choco Chilli

Here's something nice I picked up recently - Lylou brand Massage Gel. I'm not sure why they call it a gel, when it's an oil, but a quick look at their website suggests that perhaps the finer subtleties of the English language are not their strong point... I'm not linking it because it also has auto-playing music (ewwww).

The massage oil though, is absolutely delightful. The "Choco Chilli" variety I have smells like chocolate - not very faintly like one of those coco butter moisturisers but like you have a chocolate fondue in the room. The Chilli means the oil is warming.. just the thing for those tired muscles at the end of a long day.

A little goes a long way with this, you only need a 20 cent sized bit of it to give someone a good back massage.. the gel is also "kissable", so it doesn't taste bad.. in case the person your're massaging is a really CLOSE friend. According to the packaging it can also be used as a lubricant, in case they are a really REALLY close friend.. I would exercise caution with that though, there are some places that some people wouldn't want anything that has chilli oil as an ingredient...

This was a good find - a good combination of a really useful product and something that's a bit indulgent as well.

Review - TIGI Bed Head Manipulator plus bonus OOTD

In the December Glossybox was a full size sample of TIGI Bed Head Manipulator, a texturising product.

It's a pale blue, and it smells like bubblegum. As soon as I touched it I knew I'd have to be careful - this stuff is sticky and tacky. VERY sticky and tacky.

I put a tiny bit in my hair - less than a 10 cent piece's worth in my hand.. and WOW....

OOTD 20 Jan: Asos, Urban Decay, Target

A workday outfit. With temperatures forecasted to soar into the high thirties (thats close to 100 degrees for you Fahrenheit types), I kept things simple - got my hair up off my neck and threw on a dress.. it just doesn't get any easier than that.

I picked this dress up in the recent Asos sale, and like the jacket I bought I'm really happy with it. The sizing is spot on and the quality seems high.  Even at sale prices this wasn't a cheapie, but I can see myself getting many happy years of wear out of it.

It is made of a quite thick synthetic fabric, which is not the best choice for a hot day, but on the upside, it really cuts down on the creasing. Because I was lucky enough to be able to hide in air-conditioning most of the day it was fine.

I can see this being a staple of my spring/autumn wardrobe.

Review: BellaBox January 2012

The Bellabox for January arrived - it has a whopping EIGHT samples in it (more if you count individual sachets), this includes a couple of full size samples.

In the box:

  • Pangea Organics Lip Balm - the label says "Egocentric Lipcare" which made me smile - the one I got is Italian Red Mandarin with Rose and it smells INCREDIBLE. full size sample worth $17.95
  • First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream (5.7gram sachet)
  • Soleo Sunscreen - Organic sunscreen (two 3 gram sachets)
  • Body Balm from Sparoma Organic Products - Peppermint & Organic Honey - 10g sample. (another amazing smelling sample)
  • La Perla Perfume - two samples, of "J'Aime" and "J'aime la nuit" - two 1.5ml vials
  • Laviol Organic Bearberry Brightening Moisturiser - 10ml sample (this also smells really good)
  • Herban Essentials Towelettes - Mine is Lemon
  • Qi Tea Lifestyle - 1 detox green tea, and 1 green tea ginko tea bag
That's a lot of stuff. I think they have really raised the bar with this collection. Lots of exciting new brands to try, and some very cool stuff. I really wanted to open all these and try them out! I certainly will, in a rather more considered manner, and I will let you know what I think.

OOTD: Dresden Dolls Concert

Not so long ago I was lucky enough to see one of my favourite bands in concert, the Dresden Dolls. Considering one of the members is deathly afraid of flying and the band split up, it was fair to assume I wasn't ever going to see them live again.. but miracles happened and there they were.

So? what to wear to such a momentous occasion? Well, it's a concert, so it has to be comfortable, and cool (both literally and figuratively), and the Dresden Doll crowd are a little left-of-centre, so anything goes..

So of course it had to be a high waisted red plaid bustle skirt (from fanplusfriend), and a nice breezy top.

I decided to make my hair bigger than usual, so I clipped in a set of extensions I have. they're human hair, and when I got them, they were platinum blonde, but I have dyed them to match my hair. I also have a couple of red clip-ins with black leopard print in, so I put those in front.

I felt it was suitable for the event and I did get lots of compliments and questions about how I get my hair so bright.

The concert? Well, talented people have taken some pretty awesome photos of the gig that might give you a bit of a glimpse into how much fun it was:

And did we enjoy it? Well, I think our smiling faces say it all, really:

OOTD 16 Jan - and a little note.

Another day, another OOTD..

But first, a little note. Since I started posting these head-to-toe shots (something new for the new year) I have gotten some messages saying horrible things. Like many fat-shaming messages they are often thinly disguised as messages from people who are "concerned for my health". Mostly it seems what they're actually concerned about is that I am not showing an appropriate amount of shame for the way I look.

So for those so deeply concerned - I'm in good health, thank you. Not that it is any of your damn business. In fact, even if I was in very poor health indeed - even if I was dying - I am not sure how that would have any baring on whether or not I should post pictures of myself on the Internet.

Take your concern-trolling elsewhere, please, it will not see the light of day here.

For the rest of my lovely readers - I will keep on posting these full-body shots.

This is what I look like. This is how I choose to dress myself.  I'm fat. There are parts of my body I love, and parts of my body I struggle to love. I have many imperfections, just like every other body on the planet. Sometimes I squint in the sun and make my face all wrinkly. Sometimes my partner says something hilarious while he's taking a photo of me, and I laugh, and I make what can only be described as "huurrp derp" faces. Sometimes I slouch.  The brands I post are often repetitive because I don't have a lot of choices, or a lot of money to spend on clothes.

I make no apologies for any of these things (and neither should you!)

Back to our regularly scheduled programming, eh:

Review: Mystery Brushes - MAC Dupes 24 brush roll

So.. when you're a blogger I guess it's only a matter of time before you get some odd mail, right?

The other day I received in the mail a set of makeup brushes.  No accompanying information, no return address - just a set of brushes sent straight from China. I didn't order them and I have no idea where they came from, but they had my name on the front so.. they're mine!

If it was someone trying to promote themselves, well, they're doing it wrong.

So, the brushes - there's 24 of them in a vinyl roll. They have a MAC logo on them but they are not the real thing!

I gave them a wash (which you should always do before you use new brushes) and they seem quite good.

It's clear they don't have the quality of my Sigma brushes but they are quite workable. For the price I got them for I can hardly complain - but by the looks of it these retail for around $30 online.. that's a good price point.

I can't be happy with them, though. I think using some other company's logo and brand without authorisation is really not on.

The sad thing is, these brushes are really quite good - if they had their own brand, they would probably become popular in their own right.

Whoever's making these should stop making them with a MAC logo and start making them with their own brand.

Until that happens though, an ebay search will get you a set of these, if you're looking for a good cheap starter pack.  If you want quality that will really last though, I'd dodge these, spend a little more and get some Sigma brushes.

BBC's Sherlock Irene Adler, "The Woman" makeup tutorial

So, as previously promised, here it is!

This is my version of the makeup "The Woman" wears in the BBC Sherlock episode "A Scandal in Belgravia".

I am loving the new series, and I think this episode has been my favourite so far!

This was difficult to photograph because it's quite a subtle look. Here's the best I could come up with:

I love this box sample box January

It's green and gold and full of goodies.. The "I love this box" sample box just arrived on my doorstep.

They joyfully claim they've included five full size samples this time around.

So what's in it?

- Angular eye shadow brush (branded to I love this box)
- Linden Leaves passion fruit & echinacea lotion (calling an 85ml bottle of body lotion "full size" is a bit of a stretch - travel size maybe)
- Olive by Langlois flavoured lip balm - I got strawberry. It smells so sweet , this is going straight to my teenage daughter - she will love it!
- Revlon nail polish - mine is "peachy", a very on trend colour right now, one I'm unlikely to wear however
- Revlon luxurious colour eye liner - mine is white, very useful.

So, what do you think? Once again I feel like I got my money's worth and there's some fun stuff to try here.

OOTD 13 jan: City Chic, Sportsgirl

When I got to the station and realised I wasn't wearing black for black Friday.. I was pretty cross. That's what sleep deprivation does to you :)

Instead, a grey outfit for a grey day.

Top: city chic (op shopped)
Jacket: Sportsgirl (4+yrs old)
Pants: op shopped
Shoes: target

These are all old favourites. Comfortable but smart enough for a day at the office.

I am also wearing this funky bracelet I picked up at st kilda night market. I also got a gorgeous felt brooch that I'll show you soon.

OOTD 12 Jan: Asos, Target, Lululemon

By all that's holy, I love the way Melbourne does summer. I bought this coat in the recent Asos sale and honestly thought I'd have to put it away for months. Happily that has not been the case!

Jacket: Asos Curve
Top & Shoes: Target
Belt: City Chic
Pants: Lululemon
Makeup: Bobbi Brown Beauty Rules Palette

Makeup Looks: Blue Goth

So I was on my way out to lunch with friends and there I was, standing in front of the bathroom mirror, looking over the bits and pieces of my makeup collection that scatter every surface.. and then.. I realised something.

I'M ON HOLIDAYS! I CAN WEAR ANY MAKEUP I WANT!!

So I grabbed the wildest, newest, most non-work appropriate thing I could see - my new blue Loop-De-Loop Lime Crime Carosel Glosss.. and I went from there.

Blue lips, Blue eyes, frosty complexion.. yessss. It's great to be on holidays.

Products I used:
Foundation: Illamasqua
Lips: Lime Crime Carousel Gloss in Loop-De-Loop
Eyes: LimeLilly "Sky Blue" , Two Faced "Midnught", BareMinerals mascara, Gosh Extreme Art Eyeliner in Blue.

Review: Kosmea Rose Water Spray

Here's a little goodie from the December Bellabox - Kosmea's hydrating rosewater mist.

This was a brand I had never heard of prior to seeing their things in sample boxes - they have features in both bellabox and the December Lust Have It box.

This is a simple product with a simple purpose. A rosewater mist to hydrate your skin. I've been keeping it in the fridge, it's just the thing for a hot summer's day when you're feeling dried out by a warm wind.
Thankfully we haven't had too many of those this summer (yet) here in Melbourne but when we did have a horrible hot day last week, I got this out. I found it really refreshing to spray on my face & neck.

Kosmea are an Aussie company and their products all seem to contain rose hips in one form or another, it seems, or at least that's how they started!

They don't test on animals, so I decided to do some animal testing of my own. I chose two of my favourite small mammals. Here's the test subjects and the results!

Out and About: Amanda Palmer & Neil Gaiman's Trash Masquerade

So for New Year's Eve this year, for the first time in many years, I didn't have a DJ gig, I wasn't helping to organise an event.. I could just go along to something as a punter!

I went to Amanda Palmer & Neil Gaiman's Trash Masquerade at Revolt Theatre.

It was a quiet, sedate, serene, austere gathering:

Not wild at all! Ahem.

It was a magnificent evening!

So, what did I wear?

Makeup Tutorial for BBC Sherlock 's Irene Adler

So, I managed to catch the latest episode of Sherlock, the BBC's utterly brilliant modern reboot of the stories of Sherlock Holmes.

I was immediately struck by the gorgeousness of Irene Adler's Makeup. Known as "The Woman", Irene is a dominatrix of exquisite grooming.

Here's one of the BBC's wardrobe reference boards for her makeup:

From the trailer I grabbed a couple of screenshots of her looks as well, including one of her applying makeup, which has a great closeup of her gorgeous blue eyeliner.
So.. my plan?

Review: Morgana Cryptoria Lipstick - "It Girl"

In my recent haul from makeupnet.com.au I picked up an "It Girl" lipstick from the 1920s collection of Morgana Cryptoria.

I've raved about flappers before, so it should be no surprise to learn I could hardly resist a collection based on the aesthetics of the 1920s..

I of course chose the stand-out red of the bunch - it's inspired by the famous film set in the 20's called "The It Girl"..

The promotional photos are just gorgeous!

So, the lipstick itself?

Fashion Trend - Dorothy Inspired Red Glitter Shoes

Here's a trend in all the stores at the moment.. red glitter shoes inspired by Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.

Utterly Terrifying Scarecrow.
True story - this movie terrified me as a child. It wasn't the evil witch or the flying monkeys. It wasn't the idea of my home being swept up in a hurricane. No, it was the scarecrow. I am not sure why I found him so scary, but I think the scene where he gets pulled apart, and his straw guts are lying everywhere BUT HE IS STILL TALKING was what really flipped my lid.

I've overcome my fear of the scarecrow, but I have never lost my love for Doroty's red shiny shoes. I wanted those shoes so much - I found it easy to understand why the Witch was so very angry when Dorothy stole them and why she'd go to such lengths to get them back.

I nearly gave myself whiplash when I first spotted these in shoe store windows. So shiny! So red! So much glitter! What's not to love?

The practical side of me knows that these wouldn't last long on my feet. I am harsh on shoes and I am sure I would scuff off the glitter in no time at all...  on the other hand.. so shiny! so red!

Here's some picks from the many many variations on this theme that seem to be in the stores. There's something for everyone - sandals, flats, wedges, stilettos, pumps..

Review: Carmex Lip Balm & Carmex Moisture Plus lip Balm

I've had these two Carmex products sitting around for a while now.. . One came from the December Glossybox and the other was part of my prize pack from The Plastic Diaries.

Because they're the same brand they've been sitting together, and I've started to think of them as "Beauty and the Beast.."

anyone else remember this show - or am I just showing my age? :)
Why?
